Students in rural areas do not know what is going on around the globe, or even what is going on around Kenya. It takes time for them to understand what a computer, laptop or an iPad is unless they move to urban centers. Most kids in urban centers have access to new electronics and gadgets as compared with rural kids who are only exposed to what happens around them in their own neighborhoods.
At HIP Academy, (a school in rural area- Mukuyuni near Kimilili) students got a chance to Skype with other students in Australia. That was their first Skype which left them excited and yearning to have more Skypes. They shared a lot about where they live, Kenyan wild animals, and taught students in the other school some Swahili words which was incredible!
The students at our school do not have strong English language skills as it is their third language. However, talking to other students in English speaking countries will help them perfect their English. Therefore, we are looking forward to having Skype connections with more schools to share out what we are doing. Please feel free to reach out to us for cultural exchanges. We look forward to learning with you!!
